Rose comes from a family of artists. She lives in a somewhat run-down yellow house in England with her older brother, Indigo; her older sister, Caddy; her adopted older sister, Saffy; and her mother, Eve. Her father, Bill, rents an apartment and an art studio in London, and is absent much of the time because he finds it hard to concentrate on his work in a houseful of children (he considers himself to be the only "real" artist in the family, and doesn't take Eve's paintings seriously). Being, essentially, a single parent, Eve is pretty easily overwhelmed, and ends up spending a lot of time in her painting shed, leaving the older kids to take care of things like cooking and housework. Rose resents her father for his absence, but not her mother for hers-- probably because Eve is at least easily sought-out most of the time. All in all, though, her family does have a very loving relationship, particularly among the siblings. Because both parents are artists, all the children are named paint colors-- Rose herself is "Permanent Rose" (her father threw a fit when he found out that the "Permanent" bit was actually on her birth certificate). Eve came up with the name because she was born prematurely and almost died; she was "impermanent" at birth, so she was named "Permanent Rose" for luck. She did end up recovering fully, and is now quite healthy and tough-- though (due to both her early sickness and her status as the youngest member of the family) she's still a little spoiled, especially by her brother. Art is a big part of Rose's life. She has a good eye for talent, and is easily the most artistic out of all her siblings. She also has a fairly unorthodox style (she prefers walls to paper). Because of this, she's pretty critical of her father's "serious" art. This might also be due to the fact that he is, in turn, critical of her mother's work (his usual term for it is "not exactly art"), and Rose can sometimes be a bit protective of her mother. Her mother aside, the family member Rose is closest to is her eleven-year-old brother Indigo. She sticks up for him unequivocally, and he is generally the only one who can get her to do things that she really doesn't want to do (such as wear her much-hated glasses for things besides looking at the stars). She's also quite close to (and has a bit of a crush on) Indigo's best friend Tom, an American boy who spent a term at Indigo's school. Now that he's back in New York, Rose misses him greatly, and became quite depressed and preoccupied with him when they didn't hear from him for months after his departure.
